♬ The first con preparation

This post pertains to: ArtComic

So I’ve officially decided to get a booth at CAKE next year, though if I’ll ever get in that is the question because I don’t know when they open applications. Nonetheless I have been prepping myself for various con-related things. There are a lot of expenses and I don’t think I’ll break even, but everyone always says your first cons are about promotion and not about money. I have a lot on my to do list…

I originally intended to print both Chapter 1 and 2 as separate books and give a deal with a bookmark if you purchase both, but I found that I was counting pages incorrectly and my first chapter + prologue would actually be… 16 pages. So I combined Chapter 1 and 2. I guess if you buy the book you also get a bookmark.

I ordered 2 book stands to prop up the comic with, because things are more readily seen if they are sitting up rather than lying on the table.

I also finished ordering a shitload of booth prints. I ordered 10 posters and a large banner to place on the front of the table. I wanted to order prints in only 5 quantity sales, but the minimum was 25 so I had to order… 25 of all 5 of my print designs….. well I’m going to have enough to sell for the next 10 cons I ever go to.

I set up a spreadsheet of costs and prices and I think they are pretty fair while still keeping taxes and other costs in mind (price of booth, transportation, etc.) to still either get profit or break even, depending on how much sell.

I think I have a good price range of stuff, I can sell stickers for the cheapest (2 for $1), Bookmarks for $2, Prints for $5, 11×17 Posters for $10 and the actual comic for $10. Lastly, I still have some mousepads I can sell for $15. (note to self: never make mousepads again. They’re hella expensive)

I read up on displays here and here and I need to figure out how to put together a good pipe and clamp display, and where to buy this shit anyway.

Lastly, I need to design some nice-looking price tags. I already have my spiffy card holder so that will look good on the table.

I don’t think I have anything else I could offer merchandise-wise. Not really sure about buttons since even though they are small I don’t think they’d sell well. I don’t know what could be on them, definitely not characters though. Maybe like a rose or Aluna’s symbol? Don’t know what else to put on them, so I’m just going to not bother.

That’s in June, right? I can help you set up and stick around for stuff if you like.

It is, but after applying I don’t think I’m going to get in – I only have one comic and my style isn’t indie enough. We’ll see in February but I’m not banking on anything.
